Christmas memories
The tree was all decorated and the stockings were hung with care...
In hopes that SANTA CLAUS soon would be here!
Come Christmas morn, we arose bright-eyed, of course!
To see that Santa had brought Miri a fun ball pit and a rockin' Rody horse!
The holiday was spent with family we love,
Every day with Miriam, but especially Christmas, is a true blessing from above.
We hope that all of our friends and family had a Christmas as beautiful as ours. XOXO

Chicago, Chicago
(sing to the tune of Chicago, Chicago by Frank Sinatra)
Chicago, Chicago, a toddler's town
Chicago, Chicago, we'll show Miri around-- we love it!
Bet your bottom dollar you'll lose the teething blues in Chicago, Chicago
The town that Miri's bedtime couldn't shut down
On State Street, that great street, I just want to say
We enjoyed the Macy's Christmas window display
We had the time, the time of our life
Miriam, Jason, and Alli his wife
Chicago, Chicago, Miri's hometown!
We had a great time on our whirlwind 26-hour trip to Chicago! Jason and I have made it a tradition for several years now to go enjoy the Christmas decorations and displays at Fields/Macy's on State St. Last year, we took Miri for the first time. Remember this?
Well, this year was just a *little* bit different! Here are some pics from Macy's:
And out on the city streets:
And hanging in the hotel:
Our hotel room (Homewood Suites on Grand, right across from Nordstrom) had amazing views:
Other trip highlights:
Taking Miri to the Disney store and laughing hysterically about the fact that she selected the only redheaded doll in the store and put it in her stroller...
Checking out the awesome Chicago skyline made entirely of Legos at the Lego store...
Pizza at Gino's East (in this picture, Miri is telling Mommy what toppings she wants)...
Eating at Panes w/ some Illinois Masonic friends (notice the gray scrubs in the background-- that would have been my mandatory uniform if I still worked there-- darn it, I missed out! How easy would that make it to get ready in the mornings?)
Overall, it was an awesome trip! I love that we have this special tradition, and I am confident it will only become more and more fun as Miri grows up!

Weekend report!
We had another great weekend! On Friday night, I went out for a girls' night with my friends Erin, Gina, and Krysten. GNO are always a blast, and this one did not fail to live up to that expectation. I am so lucky to have amazing girlfriends; I really really am. We talked husbands, kids, career, closet envy, home design, the real estate crisis, tank tops that look perpetually dusty, thyroids... hmmm, what DIDN'T we talk about? We even closed out the restaurant. That said, I was home before 10:30... a little different from a couple of years ago when GNO meant getting home at 2:30 OR 3AM! While I was out with the ladies, Jason was home with his favorite little redhead. They had pizza night together... Hawaiian pizza for J, black olives (her new fave!) and mushrooms for M. Jason said when he dressed her in her new owl jammies at bedtime, she pointed at an owl and said "hoo, hoo!" Our little lady is a real hoot!
Saturday started out with swim class. Miri continues to love the water and is steadily working towards mastering the basics. She did a great job kicking with the kickboard, climbing out of the pool, and blowing bubbles. When we got home, two of Miri's favorite people came over for a visit... Uncle Adam and Aunt Rochelle! The happy couple just got back from their honeymoon in Hawaii (they had an amazing time, naturally) and were briefly in town to collect their daughter and pup before heading back to MN. We were so happy to have a few hours to hang out, as we haven't seen them in almost 3 months. I am really looking forward to Christmas to have more time with my brother, sister-in-law, and my sweet, silly niece! Later in the day, we got out for a little Christmas shopping and the day was wonderfully capped off with a Big 10 championship for my Wisconsin Badgers!!! Rose Bowl, here we come again!
On Sunday, the main goal of the day was to get our outside Christmas lights up. This was Jason's first time hanging lights, and he did an awesome job! While he was working hard, Miri and I played outside for a bit to keep an eye on him and make sure he didn't come catapulting off the roof. How cute does our little girl look in her new winter coat, hat, and mittens?
When the sun went down, we went outside to admire Jason's hard work. Look at our beautiful house (minus the handful of bulbs that ALREADY burnt out, despite having worked before hanging them-- guess we learned our lesson on why you don't buy inexpensive lights-- grrrr!)
Hope you all had a wonderful weekend too!

The holidays are here!
The holiday season is now upon us! We ushered it in with a wonderful, relaxed Thanksgiving at my parents' house. Miri enjoyed her first Thanksgiving meal this year. She was most enamored with my mom's raspberry jello mold and pumpkin pie, so I guess it's safe to say that she inherited a sweet tooth from her mommy! We also belatedly celebrated my dad's birthday that Friday with a happy hour at Silver Creek-- yes, we brought our baby to the bar!-- and then pizza, ice cream cake, and board games at Mom and Dad's house. Miri didn't get to stay up for the cake or board games, so my dad sent his last remaining slice of ice cream cake home with us for Miri to have later. Now THAT'S what I call a grandpa! On Saturday, we were lucky enough to get to spend some time with our friends Erin, Erich, and Jennifer to cheer the Badgers on to their big win over Penn State! If only the Buckeyes could have managed a win over Michigan too... evidently the Buckeyes didn't get a memo that their cutest fan (Miri) was wearing her Ohio State cheerleading outfit-- maybe they would have played a little harder had they known! At any rate, it was a very fun afternoon spent with friends. That evening, Jason and I put up and decorated our Christmas tree. I was really nervous how Miri was going to do with the tree this year. Would we need to gate it off? Would she try to eat the lights? So far, no problems! Yay!

Road Trip!
Last weekend, we made a long road trip to Ohio to visit the Bashaw side of the family in Ohio. For weeks leading up to this trip, Jason and I strategized how to best make an estimated 9-10 hour car trip with a 14-month-old as painless as possible. The simple thought of it made my stomach turn in knots and sweat start pouring down my body. Miriam is a delightful little girl, but understandably, she is not super keen about being restrained in her rear-facing carseat for long periods of time these days. Our 6 hour drive to Cable in Sept for Adam and Rochelle's wedding was not exactly what I would call fun. So for this long road trip, I decided to throw my normal parenting values out the window for our travel days and bend 2 of my usual rules. First, we bought a portable DVD player. Now, on a normal day, I limit Miri's TV or DVD time to 1 hour or less, usually 1 DVR'd episode of Sesame Street in the evening when she is getting tired/clingy, but I need to disengage her from my arms in order to get dinner on the table. Elmo can be a pretty effective diversion... Miri ADORES Elmo these days! I don't know what it is about that fuzzy little red guy, but she is IN LOVE (actually, I do get it... I've kind of developed a rather soft spot for him myself). At any rate, I decided that during this car trip, her brain would not rot and I would not lower her IQ too drastically if I allowed extra "screen time." So we pulled that sucker out when she started getting seriously crabby and was done with all her books and toys, and we let her watch away. Worked like a charm... what can I say??? Thank you Sesame Street and Baby Genius videos! Secondly, I made sure we were armed with yummy snacks. Now usually a snack at home is Cheerios or yogurt or string cheese...something reasonably healthy. Well, road trip snacks were Cheez-Its and animal crackers. Who can be unhappy while eating Cheez-Its or animal crackers? Certainly not me... err, certainly not Miri! We managed to make the drive in 9.5 hours each way, including numerous stops. And overall, it was so EASY! Between the videos, the snacks, and Jason riding in the back with her for the second half of the drive (I get carsick in the back), she was an amazingly good traveler. I am talking ANGELIC. J and I were so incredibly proud! One travel hurdle down!
Now, our second travel hurdle dealt with hotel accommodations. Miri's normal bedtime is 6:30 CST (7:30 "Ohio time"). Now, unless Jason and I wanted to also turn the lights off and go to sleep at that time OR just sit in the hallway of our hotel outside the room from Miri's bedtime until our bedtime, a typical hotel room was not going to work for us. So, Jason had done careful research of the local hotels to find one that had 2-room suites, so that we could watch TV and hang out in the "living room" while Miri slept in the "bedroom" on the other side of a closed door. Yeah, we are smart and think ahead about stuff like that. That's what happens when you become a parent-- you start thinking ahead about stuff. We carefully booked the Baymont Inn and Suites for just that reason. Well, we get there and when Jason checks in, the front desk guy informs him that oops... there are no two-room suites at this hotel. We had booked through the corporation booking site, instead of booking over the phone with the actual Concord Baymont... and evidently "Corporate" doesn't know what type rooms are actually present at any given location. Uh-oh! Fortunately, the front desk guy was kind enough to give us 2 standard connected rooms for the price we had booked our "suite" for. It worked out great, and we were very impressed with the hotel's front desk clerk and the excellent customer service he provided. Snafu avoided! Yay!
Now down to the fun part of the trip... our actual visit with the Bashaw/ Thompson family clans! We had a great visit! We got to meet our new niece/cousin Maggie Mae... what a sweet, snuggly little girl she is! Miriam was just so miserable for her first 10 weeks of life or so until she was on the right medication for her reflux... so I am always in awe of babies who don't scream for 6 hours straight. Because to me, that's what newborns do. I sometimes forget that's not normal because it's all I know. But not Maggie! This little lady barely ever cried in the 2 days we were there, and when she did, it was always for a good reason (hungry, wet, bored) and easily solved. What a good girl! Miriam was fairly interested in her new little cousin. She would point at Maggie and say "baby" (which is funny, because she also calls herself baby). Anyway, here is the newest member of the Thompson clan with her Uncle Jason... and her Aunt Allison...
We also got to be there for our nephew Desmond's 2nd birthday party! It's hard to believe little Des is TWO already! He is such a cutie patootie and so much fun. He was a very gracious host and let Miri play with his many cool toys. For being one and two, they did a very nice job of sharing and taking turns. Two great kiddos, that's for sure! It will be fun to see them interact more and more as they get older. Happy birthday sweet Des-- we love you!!!
Miri also loved spending time with her Gramma, G-pa, Aunt Robin, and Uncle Bobby. Here is some photographic evidence.
So, you can clearly see it was a fabulous trip!
Finally, here is a video that has nothing to do with our road trip... but it's AWFULLY cute! Gotta love my silly girl!
Ta ta for now!! And happy birthday 45 minutes early to my wonderful dad... we are all excited to celebrate with him tomorrow!!!

Trick or Treat!
Our little pumpkin went trick-or-treating for the very first time on Halloween night! She was such a good little kiddo and seemed to really love the experience. She definitely enjoyed walking doing all that walking and would get really annoyed when J or I had to pick her up. Our little girl is really growing up!
The night before Halloween, Jason and I carved pumpkins. Jason has decorated pumpkins for us the past few years, but we hadn't actually CARVED them in a long time! We used a special pumpkin carving kit with special design templates, and they turned out great! Here are some pictures of the end result.
Hope all of our "faithful readers" had a spookalicious Halloween!

Where is Baby's Pumpkin?
We will do a proper Halloween post after Halloween, but I just could not wait to share this video of Miri and me reading her current favorite book "Where is Baby's Pumpkin?" by Karen Katz. She ADORES her Karen Katz books, and this Halloween one especially, as it allows her to practice her current favorite word-- APPLE. Jason and I love reading it to her, because she's always so happy about it. ADORABLE!

The gifts of fall
First of all, I want to excitedly announce that Jason and I have a new NIECE as of this morning! Baby T is here, and she is a beautiful and healthy baby GIRL! Jason and I were so convinced that she was a boy... oops, sorry Baby T! We are still waiting with bated breath for a name announcement. Yay, we are so excited for Robin, Bobby, and big brother Desmond! We will get to see the Thompson family and meet the little princess in a few weeks. Stay tuned for pictures, of course! :)
Last weekend, we went to a local farm stand and picked up some pumpkins, gourds, Indian corn, and a bale of hay to decorate our yard for Halloween. Miriam really loved checking out all the pumpkins and other fall stuff. She is definitely a little sponge, so eager to study and learn about everything she can in this great big world. And here is the very best picture I could get of Miriam and Pres posing with our fall decor... Miri appears to be glaring at Pres, and he appears to be missing an ear. Major props to professional child-and-pet photographers, because they sure don't have an easy job!
Finally, I just had to share a cute video of Miri watching her new Baby Animals video from Gramma and G'pa that arrived earlier this week. I l ove how she excitedly squeals "ooh, ooh" and then keeps pointing and saying "What's that?" And as always, the divine Miss M has some rockin' dance moves! Perhaps a future dance squad member, just like mama?? :)

12 month check-in (give or take a month)
Miri had her 12 month check-up on Thursday at a hair over 13 months old. She is getting to be such a big girl (to us, not statistically speaking). But speaking of those stats, here they are... Miri is now 28 3/4" tall (20th percentile) and 17lbs3oz (10th percentile). Yes, she's a petite little girl, but I'm sure 90% of the babies out there are just totally jealous of how Miri can eat and eat yet barely gain an ounce. Doctor says she's right on track with all the things she should be doing at this age...walking, talking, eating grown-up food, all cups-no bottles, etc. etc. According to the guidance sheet from the doctor, we should now be keeping our poisons out of her reach and keeping her away from the lawnmower. Well there goes our fun, Dr. Buzzkill. So, poisons have been put in a secret place (they're in the basement...shhhh), lawnmower has been moved from Miri's closet to the garage, locks on cabinets, guard on fireplace, outlet covers in...all fun removed from Miri's reach. She is now a toddler (and has been screaming like one too!). But seriously, Miri is a little angel. Sure, she has her (very few) moments, but we have been blessed with a very sweet, easygoing, beautiful little girl. This past year was an amazing thing to watch. It has been just incredible seeing Miri grow and learn and become the "big" girl she is today.
Also, just wanted to share some photos we just got back from Miri's photoshoot a couple weeks ago. She just looks so adorable in each and every one (also want to mention how beautiful my wife looks...but you can see that for yourself). Our photographer, Laura Couture, did such a wonderful job capturing our little girl's vibrant personality, and was such a pleasure to work with. You can see her more of her beautiful work on her blog (Miri's entry is on 10/14) here: http://littlesnapshot.blogspot.com/
...and may I ask, who is that stunning man on the far right?!?

Home Improvement, Hiking, and Hyenas
This weekend, we took it easy for once. For about the last 2 months, we have been "running the roads," as Jason would say, every weekend. Jason and I were starting to feel a little run-down and in need of a mostly-at-home weekend. So we took things at a much slower pace this past weekend. Friday night, we had our usual Friday night pizza and caught up on some TV watching. Saturday AM, we headed to swim class.
As usual, Miri did great! She is a water bug, for sure!
Then we just hung out around the house for the rest of the day. Jason finally got around to putting cabinet latches on all our kitchen and bathroom cabinets, effectively ending Miri's favorite game of opening them and then BANGING them shut! While I didn't mind this game in theory, it had already happened once that she BANGED a door shut w/ her finger in the way. Ouch. So the situation is now rectified. Jason also pulled down all the dated decorative trim/ plate rail thingy on our kitchen cabinets. They used to look like this (this was taken at our inspection, when the previous owners still lived there, for anyone who notices that the decorating and belongings don't appear to be ours):
And now they look like this:
Easy instant update, don't you think? The next step will be to get new, modern-looking drawer pulls and cabinet handles... then we'll decide about potentially painting the cabinets. We also had fun playing outside for awhile Saturday afternoon.
Miri went to bed with a fever and a less-than-her-usual-sunny-demeanor on Saturday night... I think it was possibly teething-related though, as she woke up Sunday AM back to her normal self and no more fever. Which was great because "Auntie" Jennifer had plans to come over for a couple hours to hang out with all of us and see our new place! I wish I would have remembered to take some pics of Miri and Jen, but you will all have to take my word that it was a VERY fun visit! I think Miri finally redeemed herself to Jennifer, because I think every time before this that Jennifer has seen Miri, she has either been asleep, in a crabby mood (remember way back in the day before M got onto the right reflux meds when she SCREAMED all the time? No?! Well I do, and I bet Jen does too), or going through a total stranger anxiety phase. But this Sunday, she had a DELIGHTFUL time with her Auntie Jen, even going so far as practically divebombing into Jennifer's arms when Jen asked if she could hold her. Thank you so much for coming to visit us, Jen! We all loved seeing you! Sunday afternoon, we went to Harrington Beach State Park for some hiking. It was a perfect Indian summer day-- very sunny, relatively warm (since we were literally a stone's throw from Lake Michigan), and the leaves are almost at peak color change. We quickly checked out the beach
and then we hiked around Quarry Lake.
And then we went to the Highland House for dinner. YUM! Then we went home, Miri went to bed, and we watched the Packers game (well, I would say Jason spent more time "watching" the inside of his eyelids... this is what happens when you work too much! Cautionary tale!). Another victory for the Packers... just the right way to cap off a great weekend!
Lastly, I think most of my readers know that during the time when Jason and I were trying to get pregnant, I joined an online community for women trying to get pregnant. This was not something I had ever envisioned myself doing, but as anyone close enough to me to read this blog knows, our journey to having Miriam was not easy. And while I have an amazingly supportive family and group of friends, I didn't have many people in real life who could truly relate through first-hand experience to what I was going through. So I randomly ended up in a small "buddy group" who cheered each other on through the hoops and hurdles of getting and staying pregnant. These girls are awesome people who kept me sane during a time when I could easily have gone stark raving mad. And after getting pregnant with Miri, I moved to the "Mommy" side of the online community and met my "September DDC" (DDC = due date club). Our Sept DDC went through 9 months of pregancy together. Which is awesome, because I had pregnancy and babies on the brain 24/7 when I was pregnant (understandably), but my "real-life" friends did not want to hear me talk about pregnancy 24/7 (also understandably). So the DDC was great. We bounced questions off each other, engaged in hormone-fueled rants about the inavailability of the precise food we were craving at any given moment, shared ultrasound pictures, talked about our fears, made each other laugh. Just like "real life friends." After the Sept babies were all born, we moved our to a private group on Facebook, and we continue to all keep in touch on a practically daily basis. We share stories, ask for and give advice, post pictures, cheer members on as several of them are now embarking on new pregnancies, etc etc. Although we all truly do consider ourselves friends, we all know that many/most of us will never get an opportunity to meet in person. We have members in at least 20 different US states, several Canadian provinces, Australia, and New Zealand. Anyway, all of this long-winded set-up was just to get you all to realize how crazy it is that one of the other Sept DDC moms actually lives in... WAUWATOSA, WI! Which is 15 minutes from Germantown! So today, we met up at the zoo. It was so awesome to meet her, and I think Miri just *may* have taken a liking to her son... you can judge for yourself!
What a cool experience. The kids had a great time giggling over the animals, practicing their walking, and playing at the zoo playground together. My favorite story of the day is one that I could use if I ever happen to teach a speech pathology course on language acquisition of young children. Many kids go through a language acquisition phase that we SLPs know as "overgeneralization." This occurs when kids overgeneralize an example of a word... for example, calling all women "Mama" or calling all round items "ball." Well, if you were listening to Miriam and her new friend "M" talk... you'd think the Milwaukee County Zoo only has 2 animals-- ducks and dogs. Miri labeled every single bird there (from emus to vultures) as a "duck" and her buddy "M" called just about every furry animal from gorillas to bears as a "dog." Pretty funny!
And that's all she wrote, folks! :)
As usual, Miri did great! She is a water bug, for sure!
